The 2026 World Cup provided thrill and entertainment for the entire world. The hosts consisted of Canada, the United States, and Mexico. From the vantage of a European oriented on sovereignty and preservation, the interventions of political and media figures such as Mehdi Hasan, Sneako, Joy Reid, Dave Zirin and Tim Vickery during the World Cup reveal a persistent ideological disposition that treats European success as inherently suspect. Hasan’s invocation of nineteenth century colonial history as a sufficient explanation for the presence of players of African descent in French, Spanish or English teams reduces complex demographic nuances to a vitriolic narrative of historical guilt. It is an analysis that elevates grievance over the far more accurate reality of elite athletic development in respect to their teams. Norway, despite being a relatively small nation, displayed their relative competence alongside the Argentines as well. The selective celebration of Islamic resilience or African underdog narratives, while understandable as expressions of affinity based on proximity, frequently shades into a broader reluctance to concede that European teams continue to dominate the highest levels of the game for reasons of merit rather than inherent imperial privilege.

Such aforementioned commentary risks transforming a football contest into a proxy for civilisational dissatisfaction and misalignment. When weaker European sides are dismissed as “boring” or Europe’s allocation of places is framed as entitlement, the underlying premise appears to be that excellence concentrated in the European continent must itself be problematised. Yet the results of the tournament speak for themselves. Spain’s eventual triumph, Norway’s consistent excellence, England’s competitive depth, offer little empirical support for this anti-European posture. Despite the mistreatment of English players in Mexico during the Mexico-England game, the English maintained their efficiency. Argentina was similarly on the receiving end of controversy, but for its respective “lack of non-European diversity”, despite winning the last World Cup emphatically in 2022. Additionally, the inconsistency of these international athletic institutions must be noted. Nations such as Israel, a nation responsible for the current ethnic cleansing of between 80,000 - 120,000 people in Gaza over the course of 3 years, faces no restriction from participating in the qualification rounds for the World Cup. Russia however, a nation with far more European heritage measured through its intrinsic language and demography, is barred from competing entirely. The Russo-Ukraine war has brought many sorrows to the collective European peoples, but if we are being honest about a proportionality assessment, then it must be known that both the Russian and Ukrainian sides have almost entirely targeted military units. The civilian casualty rate is only a fraction of total casualties, totaling about 15,000 on both sides combined, over the course of over 4 years. The European nature of both Russians and Ukrainians provide them with the moral capacity to understand their similarities, focusing on militant variables and not civilians. It seems the Israelis don’t have this level of consideration for their fellow Semitic cousins from the Levant. For context, this is how the statistics compare:

Israeli induced casualties: 80,000 civilians & 30,000 militants = 2.6 civilians per soldier

Russo-Ukraine:  15,000 civilians & 600,000 soldiers = 40 soldiers per civilian
